The objective of the Louisiana Green Corps’ Summer program is to provide a holistic approach to independent living skills, job readiness, and environmental literacy for youth ages 14 to 18 with special needs. The curriculum will use Brigance and the Arc of the USA’s self-determination scale as a tool for assessment. Participants will engage in classroom activities, hands on activities, and volunteer projects. Skills include counting and changing money, taking public transportation, preparing a meal, going grocery shopping, and learning appropriate interpersonal skills. Through presentations and resources provided to parents and students, the program will help families make a plan for the young person to pursue services in the community to help them get a job, maintain a job, and/or transition to other services like day habilitation programs, etc. At the conclusion of the program, participants will be in a more stable position to transition from high school into the workforce and independent living and will have a greater understanding of the environment and the concepts of reduce, reuse, and recycle.
The Louisiana Green Corps has operated a summer youth experience program for the past three years. This program is a regularly occurring contract with the local workforce investment board (WIB).
